Amazon.com launched its Amazon Appstore for Android, a seemingly perfect platform for a tablet or smartphone. But Amazon.com and analysts claim it's about mobile shopping. Amazon Appstore for Android hosts over 4,000 applications, each of which users may test on a simulated Android phone. An Amazon.com spokesperson declined to say whether the e-commerce giant planned to sell Android gadgets to pair with its new app market.
The second key reason is that mobile shopping is a big dealm and getting bigger in the tech market and at Amazon.com, which offers and Amazon Shopping app for Android, Blackberry, iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone 7, Price Check by Amazon, Amazon Deals app and Windowshop for iPad. If you put in appstore.com in your browser, it takes you to Apple's own website. Of course Amazon would need a name for its newest venture and it chose to call it the "Appstore" and even have a downloadable app for your Android device with the name "amazon apps." Apple actually did a preemptive strike and filed its lawsuit on March 18, a few days before Amazon's announcement for the use of the App Store trademark. So Apple did not take kindly to Amazon's use of the trademark for its mobile software downloads. After all, the "App Store" app is on the first screen of every iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Going head to head with Google's Androidmarketplace for apps, Amazon is now online with its Appstore for Android. Moreover, users can now buy either real world or virtual gift cards that are good towards apps. Incidentally, Amazon by using the iTunes-like name "Appstore" is being sued by Apple for trademark infringement.
Meanwhile, in a rare hardware mention in the AppWrap, IK Multimedia, which has made a name for itself creating pro-quality apps for musicians for iPhones and iPads, is now out with the iRig Mic. The iRig Mic is $60 and is compatible with iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads.
