First released for Apple's iOS platform in October 2010, Cut the Rope navigates a candy-obsessed green monster through a series of rope puzzles and physical challenges. Nine days after launch, Cut the Rope surpassed the 9 million download milestone and topped the App Store's Paid Apps chart. 

Like all good puzzle games, Cut The Rope takes a simple premise and expands upon it. Cut The Rope also uses Scoreloop for achievements and score leaderboards, satisfying your competitive side. The game plays extremely smoothly, but that can be assumed with a port of an A+ iOS title. I mean, even Panda's level select looks like a re-skinned version of Cut The Rope's menus. 

Ideally, though, you're going to be spending 15-20 minutes of time playing a game with relatively simple mechanics that can still remain "threatening", mechanics-wise. If you really wanted to, you could sit down and play a game of Tetris for hours; getting that invested in a game is the player's choice. You're not forced to commit to that "beat the score/time/stars" goal, and can still have fun. Following close on the heels of Hanging WithFriends’ release last week, Zynga Mobile announces today that its CityVille Facebook franchise will make move onto mobile devices with CityVille Hometown. The game is a standalone iOS title with some light connectivity to the Facebook version. Players can also recruit real life friends as neighbors. Zynga says the bumber of neighbors a player can have is capped at 500.

CityVille Hometown uses Facebook Connect to find and organize a player’s friends list. If players already have a CityVille game going on Facebook, Zynga says there will be connections through messaging, certain items that can be earned across both games and special help requests mobile players can fulfill for Facebook players. 

Zynga is launching its second mobile game in two weeks, and today is debuting its mobile version of its hit game CityVille, ‘CityVille Hometown.’ While the strategy and mechanics of the game is similar to its Web cousin, CityVille Hometown focuses on building small towns and villages instead of building a booming metropolis. Justin Cinicolo, General Manager of Mobility for Zynga, explained to us that instead of creating cities, players will look to create a bustling town, invite friends and in-game characters to be neighbors, and build out their communities.

CityVille Hometown can also access their Facebook friends who play CityVille and can swap resources and energy and send and receive special limited edition virtual items as rewards. Whereas the web version of CityVille was Zynga’s most “social game yet,” the mobile version doesn’t appear to be quite as social.

As for what type of player the game will engage, Cinicolo says Zynga is aiming for CityVille hometown to appeal to a broad audience, both in terms of age and gender. Zynga continues to churn out hits when it comes to its Facebook games. FarmVille was a big hit, CityVille became even bigger and the gaming giant’s newest game Empires & Allies is projected to surpass the monthly usage of CityVille and FarmVille.

We’ve chronicled the state of Android development and the various solutions aimed at helping the developer community squeeze more money out of their apps on the platform. The latest problem-fixer is gaming service WildTangent, which is opening a rental service later this year that will allow Android users to rent games and apply their fees toward purchases.

WildTangent, which operates a gaming service for HP , Dell and other PC makers, believes it can make the rental service work by bringing over its gaming partners and marrying their titles with a new business model for mobile that hasn’t been tried much on smartphones. Vodafone launched a monthly game rental service in Europe last October, but that was a subscription service, not individual rentals. 

Android users will need to directly download a WildTangent Games app from WildTangent, similar to how Amazon users download the Amazon Appstore for Android, or they’ll be able to get the app through T-Mobile, which will pre-load the app on future phones. The app will feature a catalog where users can choose to rent a title using WildCoins, WildTangent’s currency. 

When the game rental expires, a user can choose to keep playing by using another coin. The entry by WildTangent in Android gaming adds another store for consumers, who may be getting dizzy at the growing number options available to them. Perhaps most importantly, it creates another way for people to consume paid games. 

T-Mobile USA is teaming up with WildTangent to test out a Netflix-like model for renting mobile games on Android smartphones. It will also enable carrier billing for making purchases inside the app. Matt Shea, WildTangent’s EVP of product development, tells me that it’s a lot like their PC games service, which allows people to play online and social games through a subscription plus advertising model.

Additionally, users will have the option of watching short advertisements for free game sessions and in-game items. As for how much games will cost to rent, there’s a range of prices depending on how much the game costs.

Would you rent mobile games for $0.25 for a day with the option to have that quarter added to the cost of the game if you decide to buy it? You can also purchase what’s called “WildCoins,” or credits to be used for in-game purchases or to rent games themselves. The pricing packages will range from $3.99 to $9.99 for these credits, and as for the cost of game rentals, it will depend on the full price of the game being rented. Game rentals will become available some time later this year.

I digress. Words With Friends from Zynga (the makers of several highly popular Facebook games including Farmville) is now available for Android. I have to save all the good words for besting my friends, Zynga the maker of FarmVille, dominates Facebook games with more than 275 million users for its social games. But mobile gaming is another story. Today, it launched the Android mobile device version of its Words With Friends game, the popular iPhone title Zynga recently acquired with the purchase of Newtoy. 

The Scrabble-like word game launched on the Android Market this morning. Zynga launched its first Android game, Zynga Poker, in December. Rivals include DeNA, Glu Mobile, and a variety of other mobile game companies.
